Sensitivity of the Mipas on Envisat to the Detection of Polar Stratospheric Clouds and Their Composition

چکیده
The MIPAS instrument has provided unprecedented information on the distribution and composition of polar stratospheric clouds. Both the spectral information in the measured data and its views of the poles are central to these advances. In this paper, the detection of polar stratospheric cloud particles is discussed and a threshold value of five for a defined MIPAS cloud index is shown to be suitable for PSC particles. Results are validated against observations from ground-based lidar and also the SAGE III and POAM III satellite instruments. A similar exercise is performed for a NAT spectral feature at 820 cm-1 where a threshold value for a defined NAT index of 0.1 is employed, allowing maps of PSC composition. These reveal very different NAT existence regimes between the two hemispheres in 2002/2003.

Polar stratospheric cloud observations by MIPAS on ENVISAT: detection method, validation and analysis of the northern hemisphere winter 2002/2003
The Michelson Interferometer for Passive Atmospheric Sounding (MIPAS) on ENVISAT has made extensive measurements of polar stratospheric clouds (PSCs) in the northern hemisphere winter 2002/2003. A PSC detection method based on a ratio of radiances (the cloud index) has been implemented for MIPAS and is validated in this study with respect to ground-based lidar and space borne occultation measur...

متن کاملSpectroscopic evidence for NAT, STS, and ice in MIPAS infrared limb emission measurements of polar stratospheric clouds
We have analyzed mid-infrared limb-emission measurements of polar stratospheric clouds (PSCs) by the Michelson Interferometer for Passive Atmospheric Sounding (MIPAS) during the Antarctic winter 2003 with respect to PSC composition. Coincident Lidar observations from McMurdo were used for comparison with PSC types 1a, 1b and 2. Application of new refractive index data of β-NAT have allowed to a...
متن کاملCloud Detection and Distributions from Mipas Infra-red Limb Observations
Clouds are important for their radiative forcing, control of water vapour, chemical interactions, and effects on trace gas retrievals from remote sensing. Historically, clouds have been observed principally using nadir sounding but more recently limb-sounding instruments have demonstrated their sensitivity particularly to sub-visible cirrus. The Michelson Interferometer for Passive Atmospheric ...

As highlighted in the third assessment report of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change in 2001, atmospheric fine particles, or aerosols, have a direct effect on the radiative forcing of climate change. Using measurements by the limb-viewing Michelson Interferometer for Passive Atmospheric Sounding on ENVISAT (MIPAS-E) we retrieve global measurements of total particle extinction (TPE) in...
